Aspiring young graduates showcase designs at NIFT Kolkata

National Institute of Fashion Technology, Kolkata organised their Convocation and Annual Graduation show that saw 81 fashion sequences. The programme was held recently for two days at The Park Hotel and the Royal Bengal Hall in City Centre, Salt Lake.

Day One

The first day three departments of NIFT Kolkata namely Masters in Fashion Management, Bachelor of Fashion Technology and Bachelor of Textile Design commemorated their graduating event and convocation ceremony of the aspiring young graduates from their respective departments at The Park Hotel in Kolkata.

Dr. Subrata Gupta, IAS, Jute Commissioner from Ministry of Textiles graced the occasion as the chief guest for the programme. Dr. Arijit Banerjee, Secretary of National Jute Board from Ministry of Textiles, Dr. D. Chattopadhyay, Pro Vice-Chancellor of University of Calcutta, Kiran Uttam Ghosh, veteran fashion designer and Dr. Asvini Kumar Yadav, IAS, Commissioner of Textiles, Govt. of West Bengal graced the occasion as guests of honour. The brief of various projects undertaken by the students were showcased in form of audio-visual presentations.

Textile Design Department showcased their design collections in the Textile Graduation Show ‘TANTU 2013’. These collections were developed during their final year graduation projects, carried out over 18 weeks in the industry under the guidance of the faculty and industry mentors. The students developed the collections in major textile companies across the country on the basis of trend forecast for the forthcoming seasons.

From the Textile Department, Shreya Kanoi won the Best Academic Performance, Best Graduation Project award and Most Creative Collection, while Nikhar Jain won Best Graduation Project award.

The graduation projects done by the Fashion Technology students have taken manifestation of their creativity and discipline coupled with their ability to think of imaginative business propositions in a competitive business environment and cover a wide range of research areas such as supply chain management, product range development, process Improvisation, software solutions, merchandising, lean manufacturing, critical path management, establishing standard operating procedures, plant layout, design and logistics, and the likes.

From the Fashion Technology Department, Sanchari Dutta won the Best Academic Performance award, while she along with Ritika Debnath got Best Graduation Project and Most Commercially Viable Project award. Diptesh Saha won Most Innovative Project award.

The students of Master of Fashion Management undertook graduation research project as a component of academic curriculum in their fourth semester. The objective of graduation research project was to provide an opportunity to students to apply and relate the concepts and theoretical inputs from various contextual studies offered in Fashion Management Programme.

The projects were in the areas of apparel marketing management, apparel retail management, institutional marketing including subject areas related to promotion and publicity, visual merchandising, garment export merchandising and the likes.
