Retail market roars with activities

UK-based Jaeger, an up-market clothing retailer, is accelerating its international expansion program and plans to double its number of overseas stores. Plans to increase Jaeger's overseas portfolio include the search for a suitable property for a flagship store in New York. The company hopes to secure a site in the next 12-18 months.

Footwear group Stylo, which operates the Barratts and Shellys fascias, has reported disappointing results for the year ending February 3, 2007. Losses on ordinary activities before taxation and before exceptional items increased to GBP7 million from GBP2.4 million the previous year. Like-for-like sales declined 1.76%.

Mothercare has agreed terms to acquire Chelsea Store Holdings Limited (CSHL), the owner of the Early Learning Centre children's toy chain, for GBP85 million. Mothercare will pay GBP49 million in shares and assume debts of GBP36 million.

Department store chain John Lewis has revealed plans to use 'normal-sized' women to advertise its clothes. The chain will employ a variety of women of different shapes and sizes in its promotional activities, to convey a 'realistic' image of what British women look like.
