The India International Jewellery Show (IIJS), NSE Grounds started off on a magnificent scale as the jewellery trading community converged exhibiting latest designs and trends in the jewellery world. The IIJS is open to the public from August 19, to August 23, 2010.

World Gold Council, the body that markets and promotes the consumption of gold, showcased various unconventional and exceptionally creative pieces of gold products through its theme 'Gold Jewellery and Beyond.' The key high-lights of World Gold Council this year at the IIJS, was the versatility of gold and its unusual applications.

The large number of visitors thronging the World Gold Council exhibit area shows how savvy the Indian consumer is about Gold jewellery. Ranging from exquisite hand crafted to contemporary designs, the trade fair has the largest ever display of Gold under one roof in India.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Ajay Mitra, Managing Director – India Sub-Continent, World Gold Council said, “The IIJS has opened new vistas for the consumer to experience the best of gold in all areas of life. Herein we are witness to the many manifestations of gold ranging from lifestyle artifacts, spiritual accessories to jewellery across diverse regional design ethos.”

At the World Gold Council pavilion, one can have the experience of traditional and modern India at the same time. An elegant 'pure gold zardosi wall hanging' is one of the most eye-catching pieces on display. This is an intricately hand-crafted and embroidered work of art.

There are over 10 million stitches of gold zari on the luxurious 'shaneel' and velvet material and back-layered with satin and embedded with the finest gold. Speaking of novelty, there is a 24k golden card deck, a gold bar compressed into a thin foil with silicon and adding to the lifestyle quotient are two gold timepieces from Omega and Tag Heuer.

On display are an array of exclusive jewellery creations –an 18k golden spring collection 'Zar Basant'; the design consists of golden flowers with four vivid shades symbolizing joy and playful life. Besides on display is the 'Putli Haar' which highlights the lifestyle of the Maratha rulers – the Peshwa tradition wherein the women of the household loved to have their images stamped on the golden plates.

The more common designs that are now available have images of Goddess Lakshmi embossed on them which very well explains the above concept. The 'Sutarla' is a flexible ornament from the Bikaner tradition of hand crafted jewellery which is again blend of 'Kundan' and 'Meenakari' art work that depicts grandeur and bequeaths royalty.

The 'Hozagiri' collection is another unique art work truly inspired by the traditional tribal women of Tripura who perform the Hozagiri dance. In this inspired version the coins depicting Mother Goddess are replicas of the original coin which were in circulation during the rule of the tribal kings. Besides that, the temple accessories on display are a must on any devotee's list.
