Fairwear Australia announces Fashion week favourite BETTINA LIANO will be issued with a writ for breaches of the Federal Clothing Award in Melbourne Fashion Week (MFW). 24 other companies including makers for SATCH, RICH, OJAY and GRIPP JEANS will also face court proceedings over alleged failure to comply with the outworkers clauses of the Award.

Up to 90 percent of clothes produced in Australia are sewn by an estimated 300.000 outworkers, who receive as little as $3.60 an hour. A lack of transparency and accountability down the clothing supply chain creates conditions where low wages and poor conditions for outworkers are common.

“Designers and clothing companies want support for the Australian fashion industry, but they should also be supporting workers getting decent wages and conditions,” said Daisy Gardener of the FairWear campaign. “There is a huge discrepancy between prices paid for designer clothes and the extremely low wages for the people who actually make them.”

“Leaders in the industry have proven they have nothing to hide by becoming accredited to the Homeworkers Code of Practice. The rest of the industry is advised to follow suit. FairWear will be watching the progress of these prosecutions to ensure a good outcome for outworkers,” Gardener continued.

“Until all the major labels comply with the law, can't begin to stop the exploitation in this industry,” Gardener concluded.

A theatrical protest will be held during the Herald Sun Marketing Breakfast this morning to expose the real nature of the Australian fashion industry.
