Anti–dumping lawsuit by European Committee on Vietnamese leather–capped shoes since early April 2006, has forced most footwear enterprises of the country to face harsh difficulties, especially in guaranteeing incomes and lives of their workers of 500,000 through the industry.

Northern port city of Hai Phong is housing 46 footwear enterprises employing 57,000 workers, of which there are six foreign companies, one state–owned enterprise and rest of private sector.

To survive as well as maintain good living conditions of employees, these enterprises of Hai Phong have been carrying out a range of measures and policies, such as expanding markets other than European Union and developing goods outside EC anti–dumping lawsuit.

Hai Phong Footwear Company, the only state–owned unit, made vast investment in production and trading system.

In the first six months this year, in spite of seeing year–on–year decline of 7 percent in production value, salary of its 10,000 workeres has been raised by seven percent as compared with same period in 2005.

Staying in the same situation with Hai Phong Footwear Company, Chau Giang Footwear Co. Ltd produced and marketed over 1.5 million pairs of shoes of all types, created an industrial production value of 100 billion VND (US$ 6.25 million), earned year–on–year growth in revenue of 20 percent.
