Off-price retailer Filene's Basement opens in Hunt Valley

Spurred by the success of its Towson store, Filene's Basement is opening a second Baltimore area store in Hunt Valley.

The near 98-year-old Boston retailer, known for its bargains on brand names and designer apparel for men and women, will open in the Hunt Valley Towne Centre on August 31, 2006. The new store will occupy a 31,000 square foot space above DSW.

"Although this store is only a few miles from our Towson location, we think we can expand our reach and introduce our bargains to new customers in the Hunt Valley area," said Filene's Basement President Mark Shulman.

The company's Towson store, which opened in early 2004, was its first in the Baltimore market.

Filene's Basement sells fashions for women and men from some of the world's leading American and European designers at greatly reduced prices. The store differentiates itself from other off price retailers by selling designer merchandise that is otherwise available only at higher-end department and specialty stores.

"We aim to satisfy the upscale customer who is fashion-aware, appreciates quality and wants all the great labels at bargain prices," said Shulman.

Filene's Basement in Hunt Valley will carry career and casual clothing for women and men, outerwear, intimate apparel and accessories. The store will also sell children's clothes, fine jewelry and watches, luggage, fragrances and home decor and linens.

Dubbed the pioneer of off-price retailing, Filene's Basement was founded in Boston in 1908. The store's original purpose was to sell excess merchandise at a discount from Filene's, the family's full price department store. Over the years, Filene's Basement has made a science out of finding desirable merchandise from a variety of sources for which they negotiate bargain prices. The savings are then passed on to shoppers.
