The ranking of retailers for women's apparel was released by Senken Newspaper. For women's apparel, department stores come as the top rankers. At the top, is Takashimaya, a department store that has been in the Japanese culture since 1831. The department store had started as a Kimono store and now is the highest selling retailer for women's apparel.
They rank as the 3rd best selling department store in Tokyo for July as well. The department store's history that has been walked along with the consumers make them still the most popular department store for women in the older segment.
Still, they are working hard at gaining younger clients through campaigns and their inputting of young segmented brands.
In the 3rd place is World. World is an apparel company that holds popular brands such as C de C, Indivi, Ozoc, Index, and many other brands that are now a popular part of a Japanese fashion.
The different brands supply to a wide segment of consumers and thereby, from a consumer prospective the company World is as well known as their individual brands are. Still they have ranked themselves in the 3rd place well above some of the most prominent department stores.
For women's apparel ranking, it could be seen that volume retailers and low end retailers only come in from the 8th place. Women and their heavy reliance on brand names and the quality and service the names imply becomes the key as the ranking explains. Designs are also a large factor.
