Spanish fashion designer Amaya Arzuaga will leave her hometown of Lerma (Burgos) this year and relocate to Paris. Likewise, the textile manufacturing plant started by her mother Maria Luisa Navarro about half-a-century ago would probably be shifted to either China or India.
The designer said the costs of production in Spain are too high to withstand competition from Asian countries. Since Spanish people lack luxurious purchasing power, the only way to survive is to lower manufacturing costs, and the decision to relocate production activities was taken after considering all options, she added.
Amaya Arzuaga created her own firm in 1994 and she regularly displays her collections in international fashion fairs.
Both Amaya Arzuaga Navarro and María Luisa Ellipse have been facing financial difficulties for years and had already cut staff and production. The manufacturing plants in Lerma currently employ 37 employees.
