Ritu Kumar, a well-known fashion designer known for her ethnic Indian designs, has unveiled her new collection called “Panchvastra”, aimed at popularizing hand-woven textiles.
The new collection revolves around five main characters – Ganga, Amba, Gandhari, Kunti, and Draupadi – all taken from the epic Mahabharata, to depict five different moods.
At the show, the five characters of Panchvastra were represented by five famous celebrities – Sushmita Sen, Dia Mirza, Kirron Kher, Seema Biswas and dancer Anita Ratnam.
The collection was a mix of suits, lehangas, kurtis and sarees in cotton, tie & dye and chanderi. There were vibrant colours, mirror work, and zardosi and gota embroidery work on the fabrics and apparels.
The latest collection gives a contemporary twist to vintage clothing, and is an effort to keep hand-weaving technique alive.
