New York regains GLM's Top Global Fashion Capital status

After maintaining the Top Global Fashion Capital status for two consecutive years, London has lost its reigning position to New York, according to the Global Language Monitor (GLM) annual ranking list of top 50 fashion capitals in the world.

Before London’s two-year sovereignty as the international fashion capital, New York had retrieved the number one position from Milan and prior to that, the American city retained the topmost rank for five years at a stretch beating the French capital Paris.

While commenting on New York’s triumph, GLM’s New York-based Fashion Director Bekka Payack said, “New York City has, indeed, earned its Top Global Fashion Capital ranking through its disciplined, methodical yet creative approach to its fashion industry.”

Paris, which occupied the number two spot in the overall list, with a slight difference of 0.05 percent from New York, has also won the Top Global Fashion Capital title in Haute Couture category.

Whereas London, which had a two-year-long glorious run at the top position has now come down to number three, while the rest seven spots were taken by cities like Los Angeles, Barcelona, Rome, Berlin, Sydney, Antwerp and Shanghai.

In addition to Shanghai, Asian cities such as Tokyo, Singapore and Hong Kong have showcased a remarkable presence in the list by featuring in slot numbers 11, 19 and 20 respectively.

The Texas-based firm GLM collectively documents, analyzes and tracks trends worldwide. The ranking is assessed through GLM’s unique Narrative Tracking technology, which evaluates the results of internet, blogosphere and the best 250,000 print, electronic and social media sources.
