The immensely successful international touring exhibit, celebrating the works of fashion industry’s enfant terrible Jean Paul Gaultier, is finally coming to Australia.

Dubbed as ‘The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk’, the event will make its sole Aussie stop at the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne.

Slated to run from October 17, 2014 till February 8, 2015, the display will feature more than 140 superbly crafted garments by the 61-year-old French haute couturier.

The exhibit will include the first-ever dress created by the designer in 1971, some haute couture pieces donned by actresses Nicole Kidman and Cate Blanchett, stage costumes worn by the likes of Kylie Minogue and Beyoncé, as well as his latest couture and ready-to-wear collections.

When quizzed about the Aussie exhibit, the designer expressed his delight by saying, “I am honoured and flattered that my exhibition will travel to Australia and I am thrilled to be returning to a country that I have visited only once, many years ago.”

“Preparing this exhibition I have realised how strong my ties to Australia are – Nicole Kidman was my first couture client; I have dressed Cate Blanchett on numerous occasions; Kylie is a dear friend and I have had the pleasure of working closely with her on her tours,” he adds.

In addition to the garment showcase, photographs, sketches, footages from runway shows, film, television, concerts and dance performances will also form a part of the vast retrospective exhibition.

Started in 2011, the event was first organized by the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in collaboration with the Maison Jean Paul Gaultier. It has been earlier organized in cities like Dallas, San Francisco, Stockholm and Madrid.
