Grace Kelly's wedding gown inspires Marchesa

The iconic wedding dress, worn by the late American actress Grace Kelly at her religious wedding ceremony on April 19, 1956, seems to remain very much a source of creative inspiration for the designers of even today.

At its latest Spring-2015 bridal catwalk parade, staged at the just wrapped up edition of New York International Bridal Week, the celebrity favoured high end womenswear label Marchesa showcased a flowing dress, inspired from Kelly’s exquisite ivory gown.

Replete with a cap sleeve fitted lace bodice, the exclusive ensemble, designed by the American brand’s co-founders Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig, included a bell-shaped satin skirt attached to the top with a pleated waist.

In addition to the Kelly-inspired outfit, the exotically detailed 20-piece range, which was smartly teamed up with Chantilly lace socks, also included embroidered lace, silk and tulle crafted ball skirts, dramatic floor-sweeping gowns, short cocktail numbers and tea dresses in shades of white, off-white and blush pink.

Designed by the MGM studio’s designer Helen Rose, Grace’s sumptuous wedding dress was made using about 25 yards of silk taffeta, 100 yards of silk net, peau de soie, tulle and nearly 125-year-old antique Brussels rose point lace materials. The ensemble consisted of a bodice, an under-bodice with skirt support as well as two petticoats, a headdress and veil.

Philadelphia-born actress-turned-philanthropist Grace Kelly was married to Prince Rainier III of Monaco.
