An array of exquisite wedding gowns, worn by some of the well-known socialites and celebrities of America, is on display at the New Castle Historical Society museum, located in New York’s Horace Greeley House.

Slated to run through mid-January 2015, the exhibition, titled “Here Comes the Bride!”, features gorgeous bridal dresses sourced from the museum’s extensive costume collection alongside some loaned pieces taken from the Historical Society friends.

The most standout item from the display is an extravagant pristine white gown, worn by the 51-year-old famous American actress Vanessa Williams at her 1999 wedding to former American basketball player Rick Fox. Designed by the internationally acclaimed bridalwear queen Vera Wang, the princess-style frock features a poufy skirt and a deep neck bodice.

Some of the other attractions of the exhibit are a slate blue bustled gown, a tea length wedding dress as well as a lace adorned piece created in 1970.

The white wedding dress became a wedding tradition after Queen Victoria chose to wear a white gown when she married Prince Albert in 1840. Up until then, royalty had worn silver dresses. Until economics improved, women simply wore their “best dress” for their wedding and continued to wear it on special occasions afterward.
