'Bumster' trousers by McQueen
Designs by the late British couturier Alexander McQueen still hold the same worth as some of his iconic pieces have been recently auctioned at almost double or triple the price of its estimated valuation.

Organized by one of the UK’s premier vintage fashion auctioneers, Kerry Taylor Auctions, the London event titled Passion for Fashion sold ensembles from the designer’s early years in London, his mid-career period at the helm of the Parisian house Givenchy and the time before his demise in February, 2010.

Among the pieces that were sold in the auction was an 18th century riding jacket style tartan dress which fetched an amount of USD$ 20,390, over double its estimate. The red and black outfit was a part of the designer’s Eclect-Dissect Autumn/Winter 1997-98 collection for the French label Givenchy.

Also a kaleidoscopic, snakeskin print and a 1992 prototype of the low-rise Bumster trousers were sold at $20,390 and $9,410 respectively. The auctioned Bumster pant was originally made as a birthday gift by the designer for his widely celebrated drag artist friend Trixie Bellair in December 1992.

Apart from the 18 designs by McQueen, the auction also included three never-worn, magnificent haute couture pieces by French designer Jean Paul Gaultier, an Elsa Schiaparelli evening coat from her Zodiac collection, a red resin breastplate from Issey Miyake and a 1967 metal dress by Paco Rabanne.

Born in London, the Central Saint Martins-educated designer Lee Alexander McQueen was awarded with four British Designer of the Year titles (1996, 1997, 2001 and 2003), as well as CFDA’s International Designer of the Year trophy in 2003. (PB)
