Sri Lanka that has 70 of the 200 gem minerals, and the industry is now pressing for detailed scientific survey of the Islands gem deposits.

According to Chanaka Ellawala Chairman of the Sri Lanka Gem and Jewelry Association, only secondary deposits have been tapped and not primary deposits.

Sri Lanka is well known for its rich gem deposits and around 70 percent of the Island mass is believed to have hidden treasure. Most of these gems are much sought after, like the Ceylon sapphire ends up in the most expensive fashion outlets around the world.

"Research indicates that we may have only tapped about 10 percent of our gem deposits up to now," says Ellawala.
The industry is pressing for a systematic survey using modern methods like surface penetrating radar and the creation of a GIS – Geographic Information System.

Chanaka suggested, the National Gem and Jewelry Association that issues licenses for mining would be the best organization to initiate this process.
