Realizing the need to resurrect the garment export sector of the country, the Government has decided to promote Indian designers in international market.

The Government aims to achieve this objective by providing financial assistance to designers for organizing shows in the international market. To start with, about twelve designers would be given the funds, the names of which would be decided after taking the suggestion of the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI).

An estimated Rs70-80 lakh is required per designer for putting up an international show in Milan or Paris. The Government wishes to finance a part of the expenditure for each of the selected designers under the market access initiative scheme (MAIS).

MAIS is essentially, an export promotion scheme devised for product-focus country approach to evolve specific market and specific product through market studies and surveys. Under the scheme, the government provides assistance to export promotion and trade promotion organizations and national level institutions for enhancement of export through accessing new markets or through increasing the share in existing markets.

The responsibility to ensure the proper utilization of the funds disbursed, is vested with the FDCI who will also provide the commerce ministry with the names of focus countries.

Instead of just increasing the volume of exports, the textile ministry and the ministry of commerce are working out a strategy to promote exports of value-added garments as well. This measure will play a crucial role in strengthening India's position in the international market.
