The Calcutta Leather Products and Footwear Park (CLPFP), is waiting to get an approval from the State Government for setting up a 100 acre footwear park in the city.

According to Mr B D Bhaiya, President of CLPFP, the park will be located some 2-3 kilometers away from Bantala Calcutta Leather Complex. He also told the press, “We have got clearance from the industries department in West Bengal, but are yet to receive the NOC from the directorate of industries to go ahead with this Rs4000 million project.”

An average of 400 million for this project is expected to come from the infrastructure development fund of the Government and the rest will be garnered through internal resources. The footwear park will be the third in India after the ones in Agra and Chennai.

Once approved, the park will start production by the fag end of 2009 and will have a production capacity of 100,000 pairs of footwear a day. Moreover, it will also generate about 50,000 jobs in West Bengal.

Already some 100 companies have applied for space in the industrial park and there are other footwear industrial park projects underway at Chennai and Hyderabad.

The West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation (WBIDC) had expressed deep interest in forming a joint venture with CLPFP for developing this project.

Footwear sector in the state saw exports mounting to US $782 million in 2007 with the footwear component segment alone contributing about $204 million and growing by 19 percent. Even in this fiscal year, it is likely to grow by 25 percent.

The 33rd edition of footwear exhibition commenced today in Kolkata and is organized by the Indian Footwear Components Manufacturers Association (IFCOMA). Over 35 companies from across the country and 40 from the state itself will participate in the event.
