Although in India gems and jewelry market reigns strongly, but mostly the focus is towards gold made ones, which is basically an unorganised sector. However, with the entry of biggies like Tanishq, Swarovski, DeBeers, D'damas, now it is shifting towards jewelry made of gems and stones, which is again an organised sector.

Previously, if one wishes to learn this skill, it was imperative for him to join as an apprentice to an experienced jeweler.

But circumstances are different now a days. Gems and jewelry has emerged as the integral part of the economy and plays a significant role in Indian customs and traditions. Such situation has paved the way for numerous specialized institutes catering to the industry.

In this regard, Fibre2fashion got in touch with Indian Diamond Institute (IDI), Surat. Mr Samir Joshi, Deputy Direcotr says, “Jewelry designing as a career needs a lot of creativity and imagination. But since we deal with valuable materials, 'reality – check' needs to be done. A huge scope is there in this field as especially in recent times the buying power of the 'Young India' has increased incredibly.”

“In recent years enrollment for Jewelry designing has increased”, stressed Mr Joshi, “and the admission figure says so. The major reason attributed to it would be awareness of the product, the market and the scope. Jewelry is no more just an investment; it has grown as a form of self-expression. So the scope of unique wearable affordable piece has increased. This has made place for designers who accept the challenge to carve a niche for themselves."

Further the Deputy Director stated, “The difference in traditional and modern jewelry is multifold; both in the way of designing as well as the designs itself. The new age designers are expected to possess the knowledge of the Gems and the materials they work with, and out of the jewelry process, the customer mindset and much more.

Discussing about Indian designer's demand in the International market, Mr Joshi lamented, “Sadly designers from India are rarely recognized aboard, due to lack of avenues rather then the workmanship. But I am sure this scenario will change in coming days."

Statistical data depicts that the gems and jewelry industry has been growing at a good pace and is currently estimated at over US $130 billion, worldwide. In India, this sector accounts for around 20 percent of total exports made by the country. The most important part, it provides employment to 1.3 million people directly and indirectly.

So, here's wishing luck to the aspiring jewelry designers!
