Sydney Airport and The Nuance Group announced that they would strengthen their existing partnership to further enhance the retail experience for customers at Sydney Airport's International Terminal.

The partnership, which builds on the duty free concession won by The Nuance Group in November 2006, is designed to maximise the opportunity offered by Sydney Airport's AUD 500 million upgrade and redevelopment of the International Terminal.

The partnership will see Nuance expanding its Arrivals stores at the airport by the end of 2008 before building a 3,500 square metre departures store, targeted to open at the end of 2009.

Sydney Airport's CEO Russell Balding said: “Sydney Airport is a world class airport which operates in a very dynamic marketplace with a wealth of opportunities to deliver customers a more rewarding travel experience. A compelling and cutting edge retail offer is central to that. By working closely together with Nuance we can ensure passengers at Sydney Airport will enjoy a high quality retail experience.”

Jann Fisch, CEO for The Nuance Group Australia and New Zealand, said: “The scale of the redevelopment offers unprecedented opportunities to create retail offers that appeal to the diverse range of customers passing through the airport.

Stores will combine traditional duty free categories such as liquor and perfume with retail offers such as technology and fashion accessories to provide an engaging experience for international travellers where the essence of leading brands can be properly expressed.”

Fisch added: “While the new stores will be the most visible aspect, even more exciting is the excellent partnership that has developed between Sydney Airport and Nuance. On a wide range of issues and opportunities we are exploring innovative ways to improve the customer experience and our retail offer that go far beyond the traditional landlord-tenant relationship. The dividends for all should be great both through the transition to the new international terminal and once it is complete.”

Sydney Airport's International Terminal development will add extensive new space for retail and food and beverage outlets as well as centralising security and border control and installing a new baggage handling system. All are designed to ensure Sydney Airport delivers the best customer experience while doubling its capacity to more than 20 million international passengers per annum over the next fifteen years.

Sydney Airport - Sydney Airport is the National Gateway to Australia handling about 46 per cent of Australia's international passengers. In the last five years the number of international passengers through Sydney Airport has increased by about 25 per cent. By 2023 Sydney Airport is expected to be handling more than twenty million international passengers – double the number today.

The AUD 500 million upgrade and expansion of the International Terminal will ensure that Sydney Airport retains its position as one of the top airports in the world. It will involve adding 7,300 square metres to the departures level to provide world class passenger facilities including centralised passenger processing, new retail, food and beverage outlets and passenger waiting areas.
