With each edition, Mipel - the event that buyers and people in the leather industry eagerly await - reveals the trends for the next two seasons.

“Soft bags with an eye-catching glossy sheen in medium and moderately large sizes will be in vogue for Spring-Summer 2009,” explained Roberto Ricci, Aimpes consultant for leather trends and the editor of the association's Trend Book.

“The Color-block concept is big: different parts of the bags come in different harmoniously blended shades. Different types of materials are also braided and intertwined.”

Traditional handbag styles are given contemporary twist for a luxurious look. “The crocodile Birkin bag is the inspiration,” continued Ricci.

“Snakeskin is lustrous, dusted with gold or given a glossy sheen. Wide belts made of deluxe materials and with oversized buckles are perfect when worn with ultra-chic minimalist cardigans.

It will also be the moment for medium-sized bags with fringe and clutches in a variety of materials. The latter will have a slightly constructed shape and a sixties flavor, with finely detailed accessories.” Luxurious small leather goods will also be in the spotlight.

“Many bags will reveal great personality, dynamism, and creativity. They will have an alluring vintage feel, studs and metal hardware that are perfect for a punk summer, or even Indian biker-style wooden accessories.”

Next summer's key words will be experimentation and personalization, which is the objective of the most exclusive products. There will be four color palettes.

“The first will have bright, luminous shades reminiscent of neon lights and digital networks, such as royal lilac, sulphur yellow, geranium red, orange, and hot red,” said Ricci.

”The second will have colors that are a blend of different cultures and include everything from vegetal shades combined with deep, vibrant splashes from Africa and Indian powders to South American dyes and European ceramics: for example, thyme and olive green, Bombay brown, and Olympic blue.

The third will be based on sophisticated, cool, cerebral hues such as blue, black, and a light gray that is almost white, which makes summer a bit more austere.

In this case, the signature colors are taupe, Riviera blue, and cobalt blue. The fourth palette will be based on light, elegant hues that reflect the natural colors of wood and leather, such as honey yellow, frosted ginger, and shades of beige.”

Fall/Winter 2009-2010 Previews:
Trends for Fall/Winter 2009-2010 also abound. “Bags will still be medium in size, but big bags will not disappear,” explained Ricci.

“Bags will be soft and more deconstructed, but more rigid shapes will be used for a striking, more refined look.” Short and wide East-West bags will be in vogue.

Satchels will make a comeback, perhaps due to their reassuring zippers. “Large or oversized shopping totes will be a must and can be found everywhere,” continued Ricci. “Even zippers will be used extensively.
