Fashion Design Council of India announced that Nitin Bal Chauhan participated in the New Fashion Designer Grand Prix at the Japan Fashion Week from 14th January, 2009 where the exhibitions were held from the 13th-17th Jan, 2009.

The New Fashion Designer Grand Prix is a competition to showcase emerging global talent in design. It provides an opportunity for students and designers to showcase their achievements and creative skills, with the goal of uncovering and cultivating young fashion designers, who could play an important role in the textile and fashion industry in the future.

Every year, thousands of designers apply to participate in this prestigious competition from countries around the world. Nitin Bal Chauhan was selected for his structured and formal look. His ready-to-wear collection represents the craft traditions of India. As the apex fashion council, FDCI facilitates such cross-border opportunities for the designer fraternity.

A NIFT graduate, Nitin Bal Chauhan is an experimental designer, filmmaker and artist, constantly drawing inspiration from the common man's life. Also influenced by military, Gothic and folk designs, Nitin's renditions in ethical fashion attempt at amalgamating Western and ethnic silhouettes with Indian craftsmanship.

His collections are a complex pattern to plane where each one of them looks like a sculpted piece. Sharp cuts and fabric art like pleating, gathering and rouching render a fresh and radical element to the work. Hailing from the Himalayas, this eccentric artist-turned-designer endeavours to bring out the intensity of human emotion in his creations.

Nitin has been awarded the NIFT Trophy and Ritu Kumar's Award for Best Design Collection in FASHIONOVA 2002, the Femina, FDCI and British Council Award 2004. He was awarded a Scholarship for Masters in Fashion Design by Domus Academy, Milan, Italy. He has also won the Gen Next award for his debut in 2007.

Congratulating Nitin for his participation at Fashion Designer Grand Prix, Sunil Sethi, President, FDCI, said, “I feel proud when such opportunities knock on our doors. New designers are the future of India's fashion industry. FDCI encourages emerging talent to display their creative designs and also provides them a platform, which recognises their skills, aptitude and a desire to excel. The Council of Fashion Designers, Tokyo found Nitin to be an apt choice for this competition, as he is a very creative designer with his collection having colourful hues of Indian tradition. I wish him all the very best in his new endeavour.”

Said Nitin Bal Chauhan, “It was my honour to be selected to participate at the Japan Fashion Week. The platform gave me an opportunity to showcase my collection before an international audience. I showcased a 'women's wear' spring/summer 09 collection titled 'Conditions Apply Part I'” on the catwalk and also a preview of autumn/winter 09 'Conditions Apply Part II',a sequel to Part I, at the exhibition stall. I'm thankful to FDCI for giving new designers opportunities to showcase their collections not only in India but at international platforms as well.”
