FIT on the Catwalk for graduating design students
April 18, 2009 (USA)

The creativity and talent of the Fashion Institute of Technology's top graduating design students will be on display when their designs are presented at the college's annual end-of-year runway show, FIT on the Catwalk. Garments created by select students about to receive the BFA degree in Fashion Design will appear on the runway in two shows on April 27, one at 4:30 pm and another at 7:30 pm. Both shows will take place in the John E. Reeves Great Hall at FIT, Seventh Avenue at 27th Street.

The young designers will vie for awards from Cotton Incorporated, the lead sponsor of the fashion show. One student in each of five categories will receive $1,000 for the best use of cotton in a garment. Additionally, Kate Betts, Patricia Field, Lisa Smilor, Erica Sonner, Zang Toi, and Robert Verdi will act as judges for other awards to be given to students for their designs. Awards will be given at 6:45 pm at a Chocolate Reception taking place between the two shows.

At the shows, professional models will showcase sportswear, special occasion, knitwear, intimate apparel, and children's wear designed for fall 2009. For the first time, fashion-forward menswear will be included on the runway. Also for the first time, the models will wear accessories created by FIT Accessories Design students.

Throughout the students' final semester, noted fashion designers have acted as mentors and critics as the students worked to transform their concepts into intriguing, modern garments. This year's designer critics are Dennis Basso, Nicole Miller, and Alexander Wang (sportswear); Rickie Freeman of Teri Jon (special occasion); Wenlan Chia of Twinkle and Jerry Dellova (knitwear); Deborah Marquit (intimate apparel); Carolina Zapf of Baby CZ (children's wear); and Tim Hamilton and Italo Zucchelli (menswear).

For this professionally-produced show, products and services have been contributed by Aveda, Pantone, Mostlychocolate.com, Smeraldina, Whole Foods Chelsea, and Chocolate Springs.
