Explorers help British firms China ascent

Among products for outdoor activities, Berghaus is already one of the best-known names in the world. Over its 40-year history it has been responsible for bringing many innovations to the market, including the introduction of the first Gore-Tex jacket in Europe. In 1988, the company was presented with its first Queen's Award, for Export success. In 2006 it earned a second Queen's Award, for Innovation. Now that its products are available to the public here, it has taken another step towards its aim of becoming the most successful UK outdoor brand in China. Berghaus products are sold in scores of countries around the world but today Asia is the major growth area.

Throughout its history, Berghaus has been closely associated with some of the world's greatest climbers and explorers. Foremost of those is Sir Chris Bonington, who is non-executive chairman of the company, and it is a particular pleasure to welcome him to Beijing. Sir Chris made the first ascent of Mount Kongur in 1981.

Likewise I am pleased to welcome Leo Houlding, the face of today's adventurous explorers and a Berghaus athlete for over 10 years. Leo has attained permission to climb on Mount Hua Shan and will be leaving for that adventure this week.

Sir Chris and Leo shared some of their many experiences with students at China Geosciences University and I am sure that as a result, many of their audience will feel inspired to get out and start exploring the outdoors. I hope so, because China is blessed with some of the most beautiful and dramatic outdoor locations in the world.
