Students from the Department of Industrial Design at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Taiwan, have won one gold award, two silver awards, two bronze awards and three manufacturers' special awards at 2010 Young Designers' Exhibition (YODEX) and become the biggest winner of the design competition.

Led by Chairman Ding-Bang Luh of Department of Industrial Design, the winning students met with Vice-President Ming-Jer Tang for Academic Affairs on June 7th to share the joy.

Vice-President Ming-Jer Tang for Academic Affairs expressed, “It's an exciting news that students have made such excellent performance in a competition outside school, revealing that NCKU has made great achievements in innovation and creativity.”

Prof. Ming-Jer Tang said, “The Department of Industrial Design is like the locomotive of a train. However, it's not enough for only a department to make innovations. Thus, the Office of Academic Affairs has established Creativity, Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center, hoping to provide comprehensive innovative-thinking programs and assistance on related funds and resources. The Department of Industrial Design is the department with the most creative resources at NCKU. I'm glad that it has brought many wonderful achievements. With the Department of Industrial Design providing fertile soil and the Office of Academic Affairs applying fertilizer, NCKU will provide more comprehensive innovative programs and resources. The creative seeds we've planted have blossomed and borne fruits.”

Prof. Ming-Jer Tang also took this opportunity to congratulate the winning students who're graduating this year, “I expect students to cultivate higher humane accomplishments in addition to study professional knowledge. Humanity is the basis of accumulating higher source of innovation. Students should observe the creativities of others and feel the things around them to transform the observations and feelings into their own and reveal them in design works. Graduation is the beginning of dream. Even if it'll be exhausting and tiring, choosing what you want to do and doing what you like will always give you pleasure.”

Chairman Ding-Bang Luh of the Department of Industrial Design mentioned, “The product design category of the 2010 Young Designers' Exhibition had a total of 1,192 artworks that entered the competition and 153 artworks that made to the finalists. NCKU had 22 artworks that participated and 7 of them made to the finalists, wining a total of 8 awards and thus becoming the biggest winner of 2010 YODEX. In addition to share the glory with the school, I expect students to pass down their experience to their junior schoolmates to create further success.”

The winning students said, “We hoped to bring more humane thinking to the design works this year. The distinguishing feature of the design works is caring, an element that has been neglected in product design, different from that of the existing design concept. We've received many positive feedbacks from the exhibition. Many visitors believed that the artworks by NCKU students have revealed inner beauty and told stories. The favor we've received from the judges is a great encouragement for the creators.”
