Spain's Museo San Telmo unveils 18th century fashion

For the first time since its inception in the 1900, Spain’s Museo San Telmo has put up its vast collection of 18th century costumes on display.

Titled as Frivolite: Indumentaria del siglo XVIII (meaning Frivolite: the eighteenth century wear), the exhibit features more than 42 outfits and accessories, mostly belonging to the second half of the century.

Replete with finest fabrics and intricate embroidery, the refined, exotic and sensual garments, which represent the refined tastes of European and French aesthetics, were worn by high society people and courtesans from that era.

Out of the 42-piece exhibit, which includes dresses, jackets and doublets, some 21 costumes were donated by the wife of Chilean painter Santiago Arcos sometime in the 1940s.

Some of the standout pieces from the display are an ivory silk satin male waistcoat with linen back, a damask silk doublet and an embroidered jacket and pants combo.

In addition to the exhibition, which would run till September 28, 2014, several events related to the 18th century fashion such as movies based on the aristocratic ensembles worn by courtiers will also be organized by the Spanish museum.
