Mark Newton-Jones, the CEO of British babywear retailer Mothercare plc, has been appointed as the new Chairman of Graduate Fashion Week (GFW), a non-profit event that serves as a platform to encourage Britain’s emerging design talents.

Jones would replace GFW’s Chairman of three years, Rob Templeman, who earlier this year has announced to step down from the position after completing his successful stint as the head of the board.

Mark’s new role will see him lead and develop the profile of the charitable event, raising awareness across the fashion industry and the general public. He will also look to further develop the format of the London event, building on the huge success of GFW’s revamp in 2014 including its move to East London.

Commenting on his new appointment, the former CEO of the UK-based online multi-brand purveyor Shop Direct Group, said, “I am delighted to be appointed Chairman of Graduate Fashion Week. It is an exciting time to come on board and help the best and brightest global talent gain the recognition they deserve.”

“Graduate Fashion Week should be a highlight in the calendar for all those who work in the industry as well as members of the public who love to follow fashion trends. I am looking forward to working alongside the in-house professional team to further develop and expand this outstanding event,” he adds.

Fiona Lambert, the vice-president of GFW’s title sponsor George and George Home Product, also spoke about the new Chairman, “As the title sponsor of Graduate Fashion Week for the fifth year running we’re delighted to welcome Mark on board.”

“His wealth of fashion experience will help the George and GFW teams deliver yet another fresh and innovative event for 2015. I look forward to working alongside him to continue to grow the opportunities for young talent in the UK as well as the presence of this fantastic event within the wider industry,” she states.

Mark arrives at GFW with a wealth of experience gained during a stellar career spanning more than 30 years in global fashion retail. Prior to his responsibilities at Mothercare and Shop Direct, he had spent 18 years at the British multinational clothier Next Plc, where he held a variety of senior roles, including in his last five years, the director responsible for the Next Directory.

Now in its 24th year, GFW showcases the work of more than 1,000 students from 42 leading UK and international universities. The event attracts more than 30,000 guests including the fashion industry elite, trendsetters and creative designers. Previous alumni include Stella McCartney, Christopher Bailey, Julien MacDonald and Matthew Williamson. The forthcoming edition of the event will take place from May 30 to June 2, 2015.

Part of the British-based, American-owned supermarket chain ASDA Group, George specializes in clothing and accessories for men, women and children. (PB)
