Clothes, jewellery sales dance to garba tunes

September 25, 2006 (India)

With the nine nights dance festival (Garba) underway, the diamond city is in full cry. Surat is displaying what they are known for like clothes, jewellery on the occasion of Navratri extravaganza.

The hectic shopping activity of people can be gauged from the crowd gathered at two of the most important shopping areas-God Rad Road and Chauta Bazar.

Shop owners claimed that demand for ‘chania-choli’ has been brisk and people do not mind paying around Rs1000-3000 for a single piece. They expect to earn good fortune from the sales.

To make garba outfit look scintillating, designers use Katchi art work like toran and chakda which is costly with some of the pieces costing around Rs10000.

Chauta Bazar is full of young girls who are buying traditional jewellery and the stores and shops have left no stone unturned to attract the customers.

Just as shop owners have left no stone unturned, the organizers have not been left behind either and garba venues have been decorated like a newly wed bride.

Garba this year has got political as well with parties organizing their own garba. Many organizers have put in donation boxes at garba venues and the collections will go to flood relief work.

However, garba this year has been left in the lurch with not many sponsors coming forward for the event largely due to flood effect.
