Anti-dumping duty on yarn can be a liability to weavers

In a conversation with fibre2fashion, Mr. Jariwala said, “The finance ministry has raised anti-dumping duty from five percent to sixteen percent on all types of yarns including polyester, viscose and nylon. The weavers have to accept this dumping duty.”

“As a result, spinners and yarn manufacturers have also increased the prices by 30 percent per kg, which adds to the production cost of weaving clothes,” he informs.

“The weavers are paying more duty and that is why the textile industry in the country has not achieved any progress in the last five years,” he laments.

The Surat textile industry has more than 650,000 powerloom machines weaving about 30 million metres of fabric per day with an annual consumption of 600,000 metric tons of yarns and fibres.
