OLYMP opens new shop in Lhasa

OLYMP will be aiming high again in 2011 and, to this end, is on the trail of “yak and Yeti”. With its 34th sales outlet in the People's Republic of China, the lasting success of the German clothing manufacturer from Bietigheim-Bissingen in Swabia is continuing to gather pace on the continent of Asia.

The growing Chinese demand for quality products from OLYMP is enabling increasing expansion of the sales activities there to take place. Now, OLYMP's highest shop to date has been opened in the Lhasa Baiyi Department Store in the capital of the autonomous re-gion of Tibet at a height of 3,650 metres (11,975 feet).

Since November 2002, OLYMP Bezner GmbH & Co. KG has had a presence in one of the leading shopping centres in China, the Orient Shopping Center, in Shanghai. Since 2005, a broad licensing and sales agreement has existed for the Chinese market with the Yangtzekiang Garment Manufacturing Company Limited (YGM Ltd.), Hong Kong, which has since been able to pursue a welcome expansion course. Now, OLYMP is represented with 34 sales outlets, primarily in China's growing commercial centres such as Guangzhou, Beijing, Shanghai, Jiangsu or Zhejiang.

At the new Tibetan site in the modern Lhasa Baiyi Department Store in No. 8 Yu Tuo Road in Lhasa City, Xi Zang Province, there is now an OLYMP shop with an area of 36 square metres (387 square feet), which is a considerable size by local standards. It stocks OLYMP's complete range of business and leisure shirts, polos and ties – and, in addition, the new and innovative segment “OLYMP Knit-wear” with pullovers, slipovers, cardigans and troyer-style sweaters.

The city of Lhasa lies in a flat river valley high up in the Trans Himalayan Mountains and was origi-nally founded near a Buddhist temple. The name means “place of the gods” or “divine place” in Ti-betan, as it is here that the former palace of the Dalai Lama is located.

Lhasa occupies an area of 31,662 square kilometres (12,224 square miles) and has a population of approx. 500,000 people. Al-most half the inhabitants live in the urban district of Chengguan. Lhasa is a pulsating shopping centre and an important traffic hub in the north of the People's Republic.

The current planning strategy of OLYMP provides for an expansion of the existing sales organisation within the next six months by up to ten additional sales outlets. “The number of consumers from the middle and upper classes who have the necessary purchase power and are prepared to invest in brand-name clothing will continue to increase over the coming years,” Mark Bezner, Owner and CEO of the OLYMP Bezner GmbH & Co. KG, maintains. “For this reason we still see considerable potential for OLYMP in this vast country.”
