To further the strategy, Mervyns has already begun a multi-million dollar investment in its strong growing core markets, which include 170 stores in Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas and Utah.
Castagna said this level of investment, the company's largest in more than a decade, will set the stage for sales growth and future expansion.
"We're especially pleased that our vendors and suppliers are also investing in our business. It demonstrates that they believe in our strategy and have confidence in our continued success," Castagna said.
The majority of the impacted stores will continue operating through January 2007, and new merchandise will continue to arrive throughout the 2006 spring, summer and fall seasons. Three stores, the Medford, Oregon; Bellingham, Washington and the Crossroads Plaza location in Salt Lake City, Utah, will operate through March 2006.
