The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and HSBC will collaborate to help export Bangladesh's culture and heritage and explore newer opportunities in global markets. An agreement was signed in this regard recently by BGMEA president Rubana Huq and Mohammad Mahbub ur Rahman, chief executive officer of HSBC Bangladesh.

BGMEA also recently launched the ‘Go Human, Go Green’ initiative with seven pledges to make a difference to the livelihood of garment workers, community and environment.

One of them is the pledge to export Bangladesh’s culture, under which BGMEA aims to explore the opportunity of exporting he country’s apparel by linking the country's rich culture and heritage with fashion.

“As an exporter of clothing products, we were used to making products as per the design and instructions of global brands and buyers. Bangladesh was treated as a low-cost and large volume-manufacturing destination,” Huq was quoted as saying by Bangla media reports.

"This narrative should be changed. We should move towards high fashion and valued products, which present our culture and heritage. The theme is fashion based on local fabrics for local heritage, but the style should cater to the western markets," Huq said.

"In materialising the target and dreams, we initiated a programme where three renowned fashion designer will work on three themes, such as products based on Jamadani, sports or active wear based on our royal Bengal tiger, and the third on our traditional dresses and traditions like the Pohela Boishakh," added Huq, who is also managing director of the Mohammadi Group .
