US apparel imports from Vietnam grow 15.63% in Jan-Sept'14

The imports of apparel by the United States from Vietnam grew at sharp 15.63 percent to US$ 6.997 billion in January-September 2014 compared to imports of $6.051 billion in the corresponding period of last year, according to the latest Major Shippers Report, released by the U.S. Department of Commerce.

The US apparel imports from China, the main supplier, increased marginally by 0.26 percent year-on-year to $22.420 billion during the first three quarters of the current year, the data showed.

Bangladesh, the world’s second largest garment exporter, saw its supplies to the US decrease by 2.12 percent year-on-year to $3.782 billion during the period under review.

Similarly, the US apparel imports from Indonesia, Cambodia and Pakistan dropped by 3.01 percent year-on-year, 2.01 percent and 1.19 percent to $3.735 billion, $1.888 billion and $1.102 billion, respectively, during the first nine months of 2014.

On the other hand, imports from Mexico, India and Honduras increased by 0.80 percent, 5.64 percent and 2.42 percent to $2.798 billion, $2.649 billion, and $1.915 billion.

Overall, the US apparel imports grew slightly by 2.84 percent to $61.968 billion in the first nine months of 2014, compared to imports of $60.257 billion made during the corresponding period of last year.

Of the total apparel imports made by the US, cotton apparel accounted for $31.689 billion, whereas man-made fibre apparel contributed $26.357 billion, wool apparel $2.882 billion, and clothing made from silk and vegetable fibres $1.038 billion.

In January-September 2014, the US non-apparel imports increased by 2.61 percent to $19.191 billion, as against imports of $18.703 billion made during the same months of 2013.

In 2013, US imported $79.797 billion worth of apparel and $24.927 billion worth of non-apparel. (RKS)
