Govt creates new forum to promote export lines

Botswanas African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) forum, a public-private sector partnership to explore and promote export diversification to the United States, was launched yesterday in Gaborone.
Launching the forum, the Minister of Trade and Industry, Neo Moroka, said it is expected to focus on the promotion of the much-needed investment which will generate the required diversification of export product lines.
He urged the forum to work closely with existing investment promotion and export development structures to avoid duplication of effort.
Moroka cited technical communities on investment and export development under the chairmanship of Botswana Export Development and Investment Authority (BEDIA) as some of the investment promotion and export development structures which the AGOA forum should work with.
I urge all of you to work hand in hand with these technical committees to assist each other to get the best of the benefits offered under initiatives such as AGOA, said Moroka adding that through cooperation and synergy, diversification could be achieved.
Dr Lois Aroian of the American Embassy, said Botswana is facing critical challenges in its future economic development efforts.
She said these include among others how to capitalise on globalisation, how to promote sustainable economic development in the years to come and how to draw upon the people of Botswana to achieve economic success.
Aroian also mentioned the development of local, regional and international markets as yet another challenge facing the country.
