Muslim fashion gets trendy makeover

The coming of age Muslim women from across the world is in the process of redefining the age-old definition of modest clothing. From Kuala Lumpur to Los Angeles, the young educated women of today are adding their personal touches to traditional Islamic fashion.
Seeing the growing demand of fashionable demure attires, many designers and leading retailers are cashing in the opportunity by creating stylish yet modest clothing which does not upset the Islamic ethical values.
One such brand is the Los Angeles-based Vela Scarves, owned by the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising alumnus Marwa Atik, which specializes in an array of style savvy colourful hijabs.
Another Californian label Louella, from designer Ibtihaj Muhammad, offers new age modest dresses with a fashionable twist. The newly launched brand sells floor-length sheer cardigans and empire-cut lace dresses adorned with prints inspired by the artworks of Italian artist Picasso.
In addition to the Muslim designers, the international fashion brand DKNY has also joined in the fast catching trend by releasing its first-ever Ramadan collection in June this year. Sold exclusively in the Arabian Gulf nations, the 12-piece range featured a printed pants and blouse combo, a side slit long skirt, an orange long sleeve maxi dress and sweeping dresses in monochrome, navy and soft jewel tones.
Also Parisian Fashion house Chanel’s prolific German creative director Karl Lagerfeld chose to design his latest Cruise Collection with motifs and silhouettes inspired from the rich culture and patterns of the Middle East.
Apart from the stylish Muslim clothing made by new and established fashion brands, the free flowing demure apparel designs are also getting a place on international runway events like Fashion Forward in Dubai which showed the latest interpretation of the traditional Islamic dress Abaya by the Omani Fashion brand Endemage, owned by designer duo Lubna and Nadia Al Zakwani.
