Exporters hope that leather footwear exports to European market would rise up to 30 per cent after the European Union has imposed a two-year antidumping duty on shoe shipments from China and Vietnam.

'We expect significant buying orders from the Europe as the EU has imposed antidumping duty against Chinese and Vietnamese shoes,' Tipu Sultan, President of the Bangladesh Finished Leather, Leather Goods and Footwear Exporters Association.

The 25-member EU on October 4 imposed a 10 per cent and 16.5 per cent antidumping duty on Vietnam and Chinese shoes respectively.

The latest measure came after the EU authorities in April imposed temporary duties on shoe shipments from the two countries, which the exporters said would place Dhaka in a competitive position compared with Hanoi and Beijing.

Of the total exports, Bangladesh ships 60 per cent leather footwear to the EU region, 30 per cent to Japan and 10 per cent to other parts of the world, he informed.

'We hope our exports will rise up to 30 per cent,' he said. Italy, France, Germany and England are the major importers of Bangladeshi footwear. But Sultan cautioned that export rise depends mainly on entrepreneurs' capacity to utilize the opportunity.

Demanding the government helps, he said, 'The government should provide us duty-free opportunity to import accessories for footwear manufacturing,' he said.

A total of 21 leather footwear factories are operating in Bangladesh. Leather footwear exports rose 46.46 per cent year-on-year to Tk 45.96 crore in July from Tk 31.38 crore from the last year.
