Embroidery unit owners voice their distress through strike

Following the announcement of the six-day strike by Akhil Gujarat Embroidery Owners Association (AGEOA), around 80,000 computerised embroidery machineries in the industrial hub of Surat came to a sudden halt on December 9. The strike was aimed at protesting the unusual rise in the prices of raw material and to restrict overproduction.

The response for the strike has been really good with around 20,000 embroidery units remaining closed.

The yarn that is used by these embroidery units in their embroidery work is imported from China. The suppliers from China have raised the prices of the yarns by around Rs 40 per kilogram over last 15 days, which has significantly raised the production cost.

But then, the textile dealers are not willing to pay more prices and are demanding to get the embroidery work done at previous rates, which may cause several embroidery units to shut down.

The embroidery units are now confronting a crucial issue of mounting raw material prices, and as the textile dealers are also not prepared to revise the charges per stitch, the embroidery unit owners are left with no other option but to cease their operations for some days.

Over last four years Surat has surfaced as the country's biggest hub for computerised embroidery work housing over 80,000 high tech computerized embroidery machines.
