The website was recently launched by the commissioner/secretary of Agriculture Production Department of Jammu and Kashmir Asgar Hassan Samoon. The portal contains all sericulture related information for the awareness of farmers engaged in it.
Following the launch of the website, a high-level meeting of the Multi-Task Force Committee on Sericulture was also organized at the Directorate of Sericulture in Srinagar, under the precedence of Mr. Samoon, where issues pertaining to the promotion and development of the silk industry in the state were discussed.
During the meeting, special emphasis was laid on the post cocoon production, which involves silk reeling, silk weaving, printing and dyeing, to improve value addition in the sector as well as create employment generating avenues.
In order to improve the silk industry in the state, the Sericulture Development Department has come up with the ‘Strategy for Enhanced Cocoon Production’ program, which aims at transforming sericulture and silk industry into a viable, profitable and sustainable enterprise.
Under the Strategy for Enhanced Cocoon Production, the department aims to achieve 1,570 metric tons (MT) of cocoon production and 225 MT of raw silk production, by the end of the 12th five year plan (2012-2017); and 5,000 MT of cocoon production as well as 760 MT of raw silk production by the end of the 15th five year plan (2027-2031); through the implementation of vertical and horizontal expansion of sericulture in the state.
The program would encourage and support farmers to raise their own mulberry plantations and the department would also organize several training sessions for silkworm rearers in the state, in order to provide them the technical knowledge and skills regarding new and advanced methods of silkworm rearing and quality leaf production.
