Techmer develops color & quality management system

Adding a flame retardant to polyester fibers is essential for certain applications, such as textiles intended for use in children's sleepwear or in upholstery for public seating.

However, many flame-retardant additives degrade the color of finished fibers. Now, Techmer PM has developed a unique colorless masterbatch, designated Techsperse PBM12635 FR, that doesn't affect color intensity.

"In addition to preserving the full richness of fiber colors, we wanted this flame retardant to be environmentally friendly," says Mark Jordan, V.P. Marketing at Techmer PM. "That's why we studiously avoided all halogen compounds. Instead," he says, "we were able to formulate a non-halogenated flame retardant that can meet UL-94 V-0."

Techsperse PBM12635 FR achieves UL-94 V-0 performance specification when used at an 18 percent letdown ratio in PET fiber. The additive can also be used with PBT and various co-polyester resin systems. PBM12635 FR is effective in other extrusions like films, not just fibers. It's Techmer's multipurpose flame retardant for almost any application using a polyester resin.

Because the letdown ratio will vary when Techsperse PBM12635 FR is blended with PBT or used in films, Techmer PM offers a technical guide with such information as suggested loadings to comply with various flammability standards. "For optimum results, we strongly encourage customers to discuss their specific applications with our engineers and technical people," says Mr. Jordan.
