Lanxess increasing capacity for benzyl alcohol

Specialty chemicals company Lanxess is increasing production capacity for industrial chemical benzyl alcohol by about 30 per cent. The two-stage expansion of its plant at the German site in Krefeld-Uerdingen is scheduled to be complete by 2019 end. The Advanced Industrial Intermediates (AII) business unit also has expansion plans for Indian site in Nagda.
Several process improvements have already led to an increase in benzyl alcohol capacity at the Indian site in recent years.
"With our two sites in Germany and India and the planned expansions, we are well positioned to meet the growing demand from our customers," says Michael Ertl, head of the Benzyl Products and Inorganic Acids business line at AII. "We are well equipped to serve both global groups with locations around the world and small and medium-sized companies worldwide," the manager emphasises.
Benzyl alcohol from Lanxess is used in a variety of applications, for example as solvent for coatings, colour pastes and construction chemicals, as high-purity preservative for injection solutions and cosmetics, and as synthetic chemical. Other applications include adhesives, plastics, textile auxiliaries, fragrances and flavourings, and agricultural chemicals. In the European Union, benzyl alcohol is approved as a food additive with the number E 1519 for the production of flavours for certain beverages, confectionery and bakery products.
The Lanxess business unit is part of the Advanced Intermediates segment, which recorded sales of EUR 2.2 billion in fiscal year 2018.
Lanxess is a leading specialty chemicals company with sales of EUR 7.2 billion in 2018. The company has presence in 33 countries and is represented at 60 production sites worldwide. The core business of Lanxess is the development, manufacturing and marketing of chemical intermediates, additives, specialty chemicals and plastics. (SV)
