APEX Textiles buys WM Lawrence, a synthetic yarn processor

Apex Textiles has acquired Chorley based WM Lawrence & Sons. The manufacturer is the fourth textiles business to be acquired into the Apex group of companies, following the 2007 purchases of Carlisle based Stead McAlpin, Haslingden's JH Birtwistle, and the 2008 purchase of Borders based Schofield Dyers & Finishers.

The acquisition will be made through its weaving subsidiary, JH Birtwistle and Company Limited. As a predominantly synthetic yarn processor specialising in twisting, warping and weaving, WM Lawrence brings an additional skill set to the Apex group.

Synergies between WM Lawrence and JH Birtwistle, a natural fibre weaver, were a key factor in the acquisition. Both companies use similar manufacturing capabilities and can dovetail their processes to widen their offerings to the market.

To maximise these complementary operating practices, WM Lawrence will be moving all its plant and machinery over time, from Chorley to JH Birtwistle's premises in Haslingden.

Whilst becoming part of the Apex portfolio, the WM Lawrence business will continue to operate independently, retaining its identity, maintaining current working practices and its own workforce, customer base and supply chain.

Apex aims to preserve and build upon the individual strengths of all the companies it acquires within the group whilst exploiting any synergies that exist between its operating entities.

The principal objective is to establish Apex as 'the' quality manufacturer of textiles in the UK and the acquisition of select companies is key to reinforcing this market position.

Leading the future direction of WM Lawrence is Peter Heaton, the current Managing Director, who will be widening his remit to cover both WM Lawrence and JH Birtwistle.

Peter comments, “The acquisition of WM Lawrence by Apex is a positive step towards a brighter outlook for the company.

Plans for WM Lawrence and JH Birtwistle include continued investment to strengthen both businesses, to further build their client bases and to provide ongoing opportunities with new and existing suppliers. This is the start of a new phase in the future success of the two businesses.”

Jim Kidd, Managing Director of Apex Textiles Ltd comments, “Apex is committed to the future prosperity of WM Lawrence and we are delighted to bring such a highly regarded company into the Apex portfolio.

WM Lawrence's strong customer and supplier base coupled with the future business opportunities in both the UK and overseas, offers both WM Lawrence and JH Birtwistle a demanding yet exciting future.”
