AFI Branding, an Australian leader in fabric signage solutions, has launched 'be sustainable'—a fabric takeback scheme and the first of its type within the industry. In partnership with BlockTexx, the 'be sustainable' initiative makes it possible for all fabric printed by AFI Branding to be directly returned for recycling, and thus stop from landfill.

AFI Branding supplies fabric signage and display solutions to a range of industries within Australia including retail, events and exhibitions. The company prints more than 15,000 sq m of fabric a month, and hence it is confident that the scheme will make a significant difference to its clients and to Australian landfill.

“Through the programme, we are aiming to divert 100 tonnes of fabric from landfill in the first year alone, rising to 300 tonnes by year 3,” AFI said on its website.

From August 1, 2019, any client of AFI Branding can opt into the scheme, which works in a four-step process. The first step is for the client to return fabric to AFI Branding in Carrum downs, Victoria. In the second step, the returned fabric is sorted and separated at AFI Branding. The third step involves transportation of the sorted fabric to BlockTexx textile waste recycling centre from January 2020 onwards. In the final step, the recycling centre will use BlockTexx S.O.F.T. process to create two high quality recycled materials—rPET for use in textiles, packaging, food containers, bottles and building products; and powdered cellulose for use in textiles, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and food products.
