Assam chief minister calls for raising muga silk production

Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal recently appealed to muga silk farmers in the north-east Indian state to increase production keeping in mind the increased worldwide demand. Inaugurating a two-day muga fair at the muga seed farm on the Directorate of Sericulture campus in Khanapara, Sonowal urged farmers to take advantage of the increased muga price.

He felicitated 17 achievers in the field of muga and eri production, according to a report in a top east Indian English-language newspaper. Muga is primarily produced in Assam and has been awarded the geographical indication (GI) tag.

The state government has launched a muga outreach mission with an outlay of Rs 465 crore and Rs 100 crore has been earmarked in this year's budget, sericulture commissioner and secretary Mukti Gogoi said. (DS)
