Biosteel fibres of AMSilk GmbH, world’s first industrial supplier of synthetic silk biopolymers, have secured confirmation for biological degradability along with certification for product safety. Biosteel fibres made by AMSilk are nature-based high-performance bionic fibres. This fibre material can be used for all functional textile applications.

The certification of product safety and confirmation for biological degradability of Biosteel fibres were awarded by Hohenstein Institute and SGS Institute Fresenius respectively.

The SGS Institute Fresenius confirmed that AMSilk Biosteel fibres are biodegradable and are in accordance with OECD Norm 301B. The Biosteel fibre has received certification in accordance with Oeko-Tex Standard 100 (Confidence in Textiles) for product class 1 by Hohenstein Institute. Textiles in the product class 1 category are suitable for babies and children below the age of 3. The Standard 100 by Oeko-Tex is a worldwide consistent, independent testing and certification system for raw, semi-finished, and finished textile products at all processing levels, as well as accessory materials used. With this certification, Biosteel fibres have reached the highest standard for textile applications.

In November, world’s first high-performance sports shoes with its upper material entirely made of biodegradable AMSilk Biosteel fibres were presented in New York by AMSilk in association with Adidas. “The sports shoes made of nature-identical silk biopolymers were developed together with Adidas in accordance to the new standards regarding the sustainability and functionality of textiles,” said Jens Klein, CEO of AMSilk. The new material offers a unique combination of properties that are crucial in performance, such as being 15 per cent lighter in weight than conventional synthetic fibres as well as having the potential to be the strongest fully natural material available.

Product safety and biodegradability are highly relevant to Biosteel products. The biodegradable sports shoes have made AMSilk the first biotech company to have market-ready functional   products with biotechnologically produced functional silk biopolymers. Previously, AMSilk succeeded in producing the high-performance Biosteel fibres on an industrial, near-production scale as well as in producing Biosteel fabrics. (RR)
