The prices of lint cotton during the current season that began on October 1, 2014, have been 13 per cent to 30 per cent lower than the prices of cotton from corresponding period in last year, thereby affecting the farmers, Minister of State (Independent Charge) of Textiles Santosh Kumar Gangwar said in a written reply in Lok Sabha, the lower house of the Indian Parliament.

According to the information given by the Minister, the CCI has purchased 24,93,400 bales of cotton as on 14th December, 2014, which is more than the total cotton procured by the CCI in the previous three seasons.

In 2011-12 cotton season, CCI had procured only 7,696 bales of cotton, followed by purchase of 22,86,423 bales in 2012-13, and 40,813 bales in 2013-14.

To safeguard the interests of farmers and to stabilize the prices of cotton in the market, the Indian Government has taken various steps, including fixation of MSP. The Government has issued directives to CCI for undertaking necessary action for MSP operations, giving particular attention to specific areas which include giving wide publicity of MSP of cotton fixed and details of procurement centres opened by CCI for MSP operations, opening of additional purchase centres as per requirement, and constant monitoring of the operations in each centre on a daily basis by the CCI.

In addition, state agencies, district magistrates and other state government officials, public representatives of the Panchayati Raj bodies and members of Parliament have been requested to provide active support for the smooth carrying of the MSP operations, the minister said. (RKS)
