Japan's H1 clothing & accessories imports down 0.6%

Japan’s imports of clothing and accessories dropped slightly by 0.6 per cent year-on-year to 1,423.019 billion yen ($12.98 billion) in the first six months of calendar year 2017. Of this, 92.99 per cent or 1,323.338 billion yen ($12.07 billion) worth of goods were imported from Asia, according to trade statistics from the ministry of finance.

Among the Asian countries, imports from China stood at 879.400 billion yen ($8.02 billion), which was actually a decline of 2.4 per cent year-on-year, the data showed.

During January-June 2017, Japan imported apparel and accessories worth 71.515 billion yen ($0.65 billion) from the EU, down 2.0 per cent year-on-year. The Far Eastern country also imported 6.811 billion yen ($62.11 million) worth of clothing and accessories from the US, down 12.8 per cent.

Meanwhile, the value of Japan’s import of textile yarn and fabrics increased 1.7 per cent year-on-year to 445.991 billion yen ($4.07 billion) during the period under review. A bulk of these imports valued at 396.549 billion yen ($3.62 billion) were supplied by the countries in the Asian region, with China alone accounting for 245.229 billion yen ($2.24 billion), while imports from Asean nations stood at 92.535 billion yen ($0.84 billion).

Japan imported yarn and fabric worth 30.118 billion yen ($274.65 million) from the EU countries, whereas its imports from the US were valued at 12.017 billion yen ($109.58 million), during the six-month period. (RKS)
