In a parliamentary session recently, textiles and jute minister Jahangir Kabir Nanak emphasised the significant presence of approximately 5 million workers within Bangladesh’s private garment sector.

Responding to queries, he elaborated that the textile industry also engages around 1.5 million weavers, with 0.9 million employed directly and 0.6 million indirectly.

Highlighting governmental initiatives, Nanak revealed plans for 16 BTMC textile mills to operate under Public Private Partnership (PPP), noting progress with completed contracts and others nearing finalisation.

Moreover, the minister disclosed the prevalence of 900 private textile mills in the country, affirming their collective capacity to fulfil domestic textile demands even as he stressed self-sufficiency, asserting that Bangladesh adequately produces all requisite textile items.

Notably, he cited local market annual textile demand of approximately 7 million metres.

Conversely, in the realm of export, the demand for woven and denim fabrics for readymade garments amounts to a substantial 8 billion metres.

Within this context, the minister outlined a balanced scenario where 4 billion metres are domestically manufactured, while the remaining 4 billion are imported to meet market needs.
