Inaugural workshop of non-woven under the aegis of INDA (Association of the Nonwoven Fabrics Industry) began yesterday in Mumbai. This two day workshop has attracted leading layers from this nascent industry that is to witness exponential growth in the coming years.

In his inaugural speech Dr. Seshadri Ramkumar, Nonwoven and Advanced Materials Laboratory, Texas Tech University, Lubbock, TX, USA & Co-Chairman, INDA-India Committee, INDA, USA, stated that the industry that the Indian non-woven industry had a very bright future.

Following is the reproduction of Dr. Seshadri Ramkumar inaugural speech:
“It is an exciting time for India and the Indian textile industry. India is flexing its muscle in the international stage by exhibiting its IT powers?Indian Textiles and Information Technology."

"Indian textile industry is strong in all fronts of conventional sectors from fiber to fabric. India has one of the world's leading polyester staple fiber producers; cotton production in 2006-07 is expected to reach 270 lakh bales, which will position India in the second place in global cotton output ahead of the United States and India is a leading exporter of apparels and home textiles.”

“All these figures are very encouraging, but come with a caveat: China! In all these cases, Indian elephant is lagging behind the China dragon. The figure is very alarming in nonwovens. Currently, India produces only 35,000 tones per annum whereas China's output per annum is over 7.5 lakh metric tones."

"It is necessary for India to race against China, particularly in textiles as the Indian textile industry is vital for the growth of economy and manufacturing in India. It is the largest breadbasket next to agriculture and a major foreign exchange earner. The overall growth of the Indian textile industry beyond the conventional fiber-garment sectors is much needed to fulfill the targets laid out in the 11th five-year plan.”
