Farmers and visitors to next week's Royal Highland Show at Ingliston, Edinburgh, will be shown the full extent of the work undertaken by the British Wool Marketing Board in the sheep sector.

This year the BWMB stand will be part of the NSA Scottish Region's exhibition, 'Rediscover the Wonders of Wool'. “The exhibition will feature examples of the work done by several organisations within the sheep industry at every stage in the wool supply chain”, explains BWMB Vice Chairman Hugh Blythe.

“BWMB is active at all stages of the supply chain from wool harvesting to grading fleeces and onward to the sale of wool to processors and manufacturers and the promotion of British wool to the worldwide market.”

One of the most successful activities of BWMB is its involvement in shearer training, explains Shearing Manager Colin MacGregor. “Training new and upcoming shearers is one of the most important things we do for the industry. This has been particularly important in recent years when the availability of overseas shearers has been hampered by immigration rules.”

Young British shearers learn a skill, which can lead to a range of opportunities across the world and set them up for life, he adds. “But crucially, highly skilled shearers, such as those trained by BWMB are essential to ensure wool is harvested from sheep in an efficient and welfare friendly manner.

“Good shearing and presentation also helps maximise the value of the wool as the entire fleece remains as one once removed from the sheep and this helps in the grading and scouring processes.”

A highlight of the wool activities at the show will be “Baaa'ck to Back” competition on Saturday which will be a race to clip a sheep, spin the wool, knit a jumper and wear it with pride in the quickest possible time.

BWMB's involvement in the Campaign for Wool will also be highlighted on the stand as part of the organisation's promotional activities, says BWMB Chairman Malcolm Corbett. “The Campaign for Wool has had an incredible first 12 months and has helped lift demand and hence producer prices.

“This is just one example of BWMB working with others in the sheep sector to promote the industry and its products to our consumers and, with the end consumer in mind, the stand will also showcase some of the excellent fashion products which can be produced from British wool.”

We are delighted to be working with the NSA Scottish Region at the Royal Highland Show and value the opportunity the show gives us to highlight the work of BWMB to both farmers and consumers.”
