“Earlier, when we started in the first year, we were facing a lot of competition from the Chinese yarn because it was available at a cheaper price than ours. But, when we propagated that our product is way different from the Chinese variety, then the people started buying silk from us though our prices were slightly higher”.
Informing about the importance of the Silk Mark Certification, he said, “The Silk Mark Certification is very important. It's like Wool Mark or other similar quality certifications. It gives an edge in the market and assures the consumers that the product is pure silk and not a mixture of other fabrics. They have branded it effectively.
“We have bagged 3-4 types of certifications viz. Handloom Certificate for hand-made fabrics, Silk Mark Certificate, The Wild Silk Logo for the silk that is reared in a natural environment and the Organic Silk Certificate from GOTS.
“Now I am planning to approach the Government of India to propose that we start a separate certification for this sector also. It will be a Fair Trade Certificate, just like in western countries. There they use the Fair Trade Certificate to ensure that people are working in good working conditions, hygiene is taken care of and various facilities are provided like clean toilets, bathrooms, pure drinking water, etc.
“It also ensures that there is no child labor and the laborers are being paid the minimum wages. In all, there are 16-17 parameters for that. I have proposed to the Government of India that, in addition to Handloom Mark and Silk Mark, we start using a Fair Trade Certification that will increase the credibility of our product in the western market also”.
