In its stock exchange release of 3 March 2011, Marimekko announced that it was building international e-commerce. The first phase is now complete: online retailing in the United States starts this week. E-commerce will augment Marimekko's existing distribution channels as part of the company's growth strategy in North America.
“In the long term, we expect e-commerce to generate significant sales and to become an important new channel for serving consumers. We have seen a clear increase in interest in Marimekko on the web and in social media. A visitor who has seen an attractive product or our fashion show for example on Facebook will now be able to shop conveniently in our US web store,” says President and CEO Mika Ihamuotila.
“I believe that e-commerce will support and increase sales at all Marimekko stores across the country and improve the availability of our products. Four new Marimekko shops were recently opened in the US in Crate and Barrel stores (New York, Chicago, San Francisco and Los Angeles), and the intention is to open two more shops this autumn. In September, we will open our own flagship store on New York's Fifth Avenue,” he adds.
Goods ordered from the online store opening this week, marimekko will only be delivered to addresses in the United States.
The next online store will be opened in Finland, currently planned for the beginning of 2012. The intention is to expand online retail operations into other countries later on gradually.
As announced earlier, the investment in e-commerce is valued this year at roughly one million euros and is included in the estimate of the total investments planned for 2011.
